Let’s be honest. You know there is something you should be doing right now in your life, in your business, in your relationship, with your health… But the only thing you’re ACTUALLY doing is keeping your seat warm. Why is that? Why is it that so many people sit on brilliant ideas, inspiring business plans with so much potential, ideas for books, dreams of places they want to visit, hopes of leaving that dead-end taking you know where but depression-ville JOB, ending a bad relationship or better yet, finding that perfect one with your soul mate, the list could go on, but why is it that you have these hopes, dreams and goals but choose to procrastinate instead of doing anything to get exactly what it is you want? Why are you procrastinating?
I’ll tell you why… It’s because you’re scared! Let me go on for just a bit longer, I promise you, you won’t be scared for much longer… I’m about to give you three things to stop procrastination dead in its tracks so you can finally have what you want, no matter how big or small it is.
You see, being scared or having a sense of fear is both necessary and normal for humans. We need it for better judgement in danger. But when it comes to taking some leap of faith to get what we want as far as goals and desires are concerned our fears throw a net over us and so many of you just make excuses.
Let me break something down for you and you have probably heard this before but if not you’ll love it… F.E.A.R. stands for False Evidence Appearing Real.
It’s been said, and I’ll reference one of my favourite books here, Feal The Fear And Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers, that 90% of everything we ever worry about doesn’t ever come to fruition.
When procrastination kicks in and you start digging around in your brain for that excuse you know is lame and not good enough it’s time to take a look at the 3 Things You Can Do Right Now To Stop Procrastinating:
- Change your state. You’re not going to do anything different in your current state. Get up and move your body. Come on! If you’re on your smartphone take it with you and keep reading or after this grab your journal and come for a walk with me. We need to get your physiology different so we can change the thing that’s holding you back.
- Identify exactly what benefits you will get out of taking action and what pain you will suffer if you don’t. This process can be a simple one or for those of you more experienced in the art of procrastination may mean an extra minute out of your day. In your journal write down the things you will get by taking action and be specific! Next to it I need you to write down the absolute level of pain you will suffer by sitting on your rear-end and doing nothing. What’s it going to cost you? Your health? Your marriage? Your relationship with your kids? Your business? Your life? I don’t know what it is for you but I do know one thing… doing nothing will surely be the guaranteed way to you eventually experiencing the pain you’ve identified.
- Do it anyway. As we have found out, there is an 90% chance that if you go against your fears better judgement that your worries won’t be that catastrophic that you can’t recover. You’re more resilient than that. Give yourself some credit! As humans we have very vivid imaginations and tend to paint pictures of the worst circumstances in our minds of things going wrong. If they actually do go pear-shaped it’s normally not as bad as we thought and we look back a week, a month, a year from now and realise that the circumstances we found ourselves in were a necessary part of our journey to getting what we want.
Who would of thought that the universe put us in the situation, encouraged us to feel fearful and still take the leap of faith anyway? You see, if you really believe in what you want and arn’t just full of talk, cause really, let’s face it, words are the cheapest thing on earth, then you’re unwavering faith will see you agree with everything I have just told you. It’s all part of your story. The thing you are procrastinating with right now could be the only thing stopping you from getting what you want! And maybe, just maybe, these steps are part of the process you need to achieve your dreams.
